You are permitted upto 5 email addresses associated with every fax number for sending and receiving and an unlimited amount of fax numbers (for example, one in each country / city you do business in) can be connected to an individual account. There are also free, pro and corporate packages available.
On the downside, overage is expensive and customer support is not at all good in some places. Some people also report intermittent slow send times.
Overall eFax is a great product backed by a company that has been in the internet faxing industry for many years.
Features
Both the client software and the internet portal are easy to navigate and use. The client software sets up a ‘fax printer’ which permits sending of faxes from any application that has printing functionality. There is also an option to ‘Scan and Fax’ if you have a scanner attached to your PC.

Ease Of Use
You can be setup in less than five minutes by way of the web portal and not much longer if you download and install the desktop software called eFax Messenger.
Both are very easy to install and use. Creating a unique cover page is slightly trickier and needed a good hunt through the online help nevertheless there are loads of pre-prepared cover pages already available to use as templates. Fax traffic tracking is simply handled via the web logs and faxes can even be resent from the sent log.
Customer Support
There have been reports of bad customer service from eFax. However, our experience of them has been really good. The live chat was useful and the telephone support was good. In both cases they answered all our questions. During the telephone conversation we requested some information be sent to us and it was emailed within the hour. The online documentation and FAQ sections are informative and reasonably expansive. It would be better to see some turorials or webinars but that is more a ‘nice to have’ rather than a major omission.
Even the cancellation process – via a toll-free call – was pleasant and the operator offered us an additional 2 months free service if we stayed with them.
Final Word
eFax is an excellent service. The coverage is the best available with more locations covered than any other product currently reviewed. The interface is clean and easy to use from the word go. The option to have multiple fax numbers and emails on a single account is also very useful. But eFax costs the most and gives the least included pages. It is a shame that the largest supplier in the internet faxing field could not offer more attractive pricing for their customers. That being said, if you want to use the premium service that has the greatest coverage and largest customer base then eFax is for you.

Overview and History
SpiderOak is a privately controlled enterprise that are based in Northbrook, Illinios and were setup in December 2007. The company offer an Online Backup, Online Synchronization and Online Sharing Service which offers 100Gb of web storage for $10 a month and you can have upto 1.5Tb of storage in 100Gb chunks, each chunk costing an additional $10 per month.
Feature Set
Security
SpiderOak take security VERY seriously. Unsatisfied with 256bit AES encryption on information in transit and on their servers; they further protect your data by utilizing 2048bit RSA password encryption. That’s way more secure than you need to get for your piece of mind.
They also support ‘zero-knowledge’ data encryption which means that at all stages, there is absolutely no way that anyone – even SpiderOak staff – can see any of your files, not even the folder and file names.
Physically, their data center – which they own rather than outsourcing – uses the latest technology with redundancy at all levels and several fast connections to the internet. They additionally can provide geographically redundant protection (where your information is stored in multiple data centers located in different parts of the world at the same time) for an extra cost.
Backup Features
SpiderOak employs a storage redundancy methodology that means only one copy of a unique file is kept on their servers. If you have the same file in different folders, then they leave a marker in each folder but only store one original. This reduces the volume of storage you require and allows SpiderOak to keep unlimited file versions of any document but only stores and uploads the differences between files.
This makes uploads much quicker and reduces the amount of storage space needed. To give you extra control over file versions, there is the option to purge older versions as and when you wish to.
SpiderOak archives desktops, laptops and servers running MAC, windows or Linux; In addition to network drives and removable media all from a single account. Just pick a drive for archiving and SpiderOak will monitor the drive for alterations and new items and append them to your backup queue.
Click here to view a short video about SpiderOak’s archive features.
Restore Features
Since SpiderOak is a backup and synchronization service, you have instant internet access to any version of any file you have ever backed up. If the file you want to recover is a synced file, then it will be on any other device that you have setup for synchronization.
There is an option within the client software to keep a copy of all archived data blocks in a location of your choice, this can be a local folder or an FTP or sFTP server. This gives much faster restores if bandwidth is limited or restricted. SpiderOak will always check this location for restore blocks before retrieving from the offsite storage.
Control and Analysis
The desktop client gives details of which files are currently being archived, what activities are being carried out within your SpiderOak network, a log of all the accrued activity and statistics including the total amount of storage being used within your SpiderOak network.
As far as controls go, the client software allows you to limit the maximum size of individual files that can be backed up and to not backup files older than a specific time in addition to options to exclude specific files and folders.
Scheduling can be managed for backup, sync and sharing options and can be set to anything from automatic to once every 2 days. When set to automatic any amendments to files within the backup, sync or share sets is instantly addedapended to the upload queue.
The SpiderOak client can use Proxy servers using the Network tab of the preferences screen. The amount of internet bandwidth that SpiderOak uses can be configured from the Network tab.
Interface
The installed client interface is very comprehensive, there are five tabs:
- Status – shows details of shares, syncs and backups from all of the computers associated with your account. As well as how much of your current storage allowance being used.
- Backup – this is where you choose which files to archive on the current machine.
- View – This depicts currently archived files and folders for each of the machines in your SpiderOak network and permits you to download any file or folder as a compressed (zip) file.
- Sync – This tab permits you to create or manage synchronization jobs between PCs in your SpiderOak network.
- Share – The final tab manages and displays the status of shares.
The internet site is a lot more straightforward: It presents a simple tree structure of files and folders organized under each machine that is a part of your SpiderOak network.
Device Support
SpiderOak currently supports computers running Linux, Windows or MAC. This includes server operating systems.
File Sharing and Collaboration
SpiderOak uses a facility called ShareRooms where you can share your information . Amendments to any files in ShareRooms are automatically available to all members of the ShareRoom and changes are added to an RSS feed so users can be kept up-to-date with the latest changes.
The files and folders in a ShareRoom can be from any PC within your SpiderOak network, not just files synced to the web site. When a ShareRoom is created it is assigned a unique web location which you can distribute to anyone you want to access the ShareRoom or you can request people to login to SpiderOak’s website using the ShareRoom username and password created when the ShareRoom was setup.
Synchronization
SpiderOak has synchronization at its core: You are allowed to have an unlimited amount of devices in a single account and configure all of them to synchronize with a central repository.
It is possible to configure separate synchronization jobs for your files and the whole procedure is wrapped in their impressive encryption blanket.
Web 2.0 Integration
None at this time.
Customer Support
There is no telephone or live chat, however, the email support is great as is the forum and blog.
The list of non-interactive support choices is quite expansive:
- Documentation
- FAQs
- Demos
- Testimonials
- Tutorials
- Case Studies
There is also a free edition which allows 2Gb of storage.
Ease of Use
You can sign up, download the client program, and be protected by SpiderOak in less than five minutes. The client is chic, easy to use and provides a wealth of information without overwhelming you. Shares, synchronizations and backups are all easy to manage and monitor.
Cost
Initial setup – free
Monthly Fee – $10 / mth / 100Gb
Annual Cost – $100 / year / 100Gb
Initial permitted storage amount – 100Gb
Cost of additional storage – $10 / 100Gb
Cost of additional devices / PCs / users – unlimited
Referral Program – Yes
E-billing facility – Yes
Conclusion
SpiderOak offers a great way to archive, synchronize and share data from an unlimited amount of devices using one account. The pricing is very reasonable and since exta storage is always available in tidy 100Gb chunks you never have to worry about running out of growing space.
Add to this the unlimited file versioning and easy restore options and SpiderOak is a real winner. The only downside is that portable devices such as iPhones and PDAs are currently not supported. However, if you have Windows, MAC or Linux PCs that need to share or sync files then SpiderOak is an excellent choice.

Their solution to web-based backups is fairly unusual in that they assume most people would like to backup all your personal data – documents, music, pictures, videos, etc. – so you will need to remove information you do not want backed up. The second option is to DVD if you are restoring less than 4Gb of data – this will cost you $99. Or if you are restoring more than 4Gb of files, they will send you a portable drive and charge you $189.
These options seem rather steep but most Web Backup Providers do not even offer these options.
Control and Analysis
A central control panel is available on the online site that provides management of multiple accounts. Within the client program you can see information on files waiting to be archived as well as overview graphs of what has already been backed up.

There is also an FAQ section and the free trial which lasts 2 weeks, so you have plenty of time to assess the service before committing your whole five dollars per month!
Ease of Use
BackBlaze is really simple to use, if you leave it at the default settings, then it will backup all non-system data from all your local drives automatically. If you need to amend things then the options screens are well laid out and straightforward to navigate.

After BackBlaze is installed it immediately scans your locally connected drives, locates your personal files such as documents, pictures, music, etc. and immediately starts to back them up for you. It’s like having your very own over-eager Jeannie desperate to get the job done.
The cost is really cheap and while there are quite a lot of customer support options not provided, the available support is very well done and their tech staff are really helpful and friendly.
If you are looking for a straightforward online backup solution at a fixed price then BackBlaze is well worth considering.

Overview and History
Acronis were setup in 2001. In the beginning they concentrated on drive partitioning programs, then widened their scope into the backup and disaster recovery fields and now cover the whole arena of PC protection. Their main program: Acronis True Image is intended to archive hard drives, network drives and external media. In 2010 they released Acronis Backup and Recovery 10 for large business clients.
The Acronis Online backup solution became available to the public in 2010 and can be installed as a standalone program or as part of the Acronis True Image Suite. This is Acronis’ first foray into the web backup world and marks a huge step in keeping your data secure.
Feature Set
Security
Security is good: Folders are protected with 256 AES encryption both during transfer and when stored in their data centers. You can setup an encryption password which keeps your data even more protected . A note of warning: if you forget your password you will lose all the data you have archived. So keep it safe!
Backup Features
Acronis Online Backup offers a straightforward backup scheduling service. After you have installed the desktop software, just choose the data you would like to archive and then either set a schedule for the files to be backed up or use the ‘Back Up Now’ button. The client does back up open / in use files yet seems not to use ‘block level incremental backups’ which means that complete files will be backed up instead of just the sections of the files that have been changed. The consequence of this is that backups are slower than some other Online Backup providers.
File versioning is supported and an unlimited amount of versions can be held for up to 45 days. You can also set a specific number of editions to store.
Restore Features
Restores can be carried out from either the desktop software or from the online portal. In either case, you have the functionality to select which version of a file you want to retrieve. Once selected, the file is returned to you as a zip (compressed) file that can be saved anywhere you would like.
If you have backed up files more than once in a day, then a scrollbar at the bottom of the client and web portal interfaces show the times of each successful backup and allows you to click on these times to restore files from that specific backup.
Control and Analysis
If you use Acronis Online Backup as part of another Acronis Product such as Acronis True Image then Online Backup flawlessly slots in with the parent product and you have access to all the reporting, logging and controls from the parent suite. If you use Acronis Online Backup as a standalone product, then you get no reporting or logging.
Processor throttling is settable to Low, Medium or High, while online bandwidth can be set to any limit you like. Proxy servers are also supported. Backup alerts can be sent to multiple email addresses and you can set up the client to perform pre- and post functions, which can be very convenient if lets say you want to backup a database to the local drive so it can be included in the online backup.
Interface
The client interface on the standalone version is really easy to use and displays how much of your storage allowance you have used up on each of up to five machines at a glance. It additionally displays when the next scheduled backup is due. The online portal interface is nearly identical to the client interface lacking only the backup options.
Device Support
Currently only supports Windows client computers.
Limitations
No support for MAC, mobile devices or server platforms.
No way to extend past the 250Gb allowance.
No way to add more than 5 PCs to an account.
File Sharing and Collaboration
None.
Synchronization
Synchronization to the web portal but not between PCs.
Web 2.0 Integration
None.

- LiveChat

Ease of Use
The client is simple to install and really easy to run. The interface makes managing up to 5 computers very easy and provides an instant overview of how much data has been archived for each PC as well as how much you have remaining. The interface is crisp and uncluttered with no learning curve needed to get up and running.
Cost
- Initial setup is free
- Monthly Fee: $3.95 / mth
- Yearly Cost: $39.95 / year
- Initial storage allowance: 250Gb
- Amount of devices allowed: Up to 5 PCs can share the 250Gb allowance.

- E-billing facility: Yes
- Free Version / Free Trial: There is a two month free trial which allows 2Gb of backup space.
- Hidden costs: Phone support can be purchased on a per incident basis for $11.84.
Conclusion
This is Acronis’ first go at an online backup solution and in my opinion they have done rather well. The point that the service can be standalone or integrated into the existing client software is a nice touch and offers flexibility for users. There are a few items absent from the standalone version, for example reporting and centralized administration of all PCs within one account. But these will probably become available in time.
The only plan offers an ample 250Gb of storage for a very reasonable cost and the client can be setup to use as much or as little resource and bandwidth as you want. The interface is clean and easy to use and file restoring is quick and reliable.
In conclusion Acronis have made a solid, straightforward and very reliable online backup solution at a great price which is backed by the Acronis name: A global leader in backup technology. A great option from a great name.
If you want even more security, then buy one of their suite programs, such as Acronis True Image Home and get total PC protection.
Overview and History
The initial software for Data Deposit Box was setup by Tim Jewell and Rob Schenkel. In 2002, Tim and Rob teamed up with Jamie Brenzel to setup Acpana Business Systems Inc. In 2003, they released Data Deposit Box to the public. They are head office in Toronto, Canada and have a American office in New York.
They offer 1 plan which provides easy, low pricing and makes Data Deposit Box extremely interesting to both individuals and businesses needing a simple, smart backup solution.
Feature Set
Security
Data Deposit Box have the highest security we have come across. As well as that, your data are moved using a special protocol invented specifically for internet archiving.
Additionally you are given your own username and password that form a unique encryption key and ensure that no one – not even the administrators at Data Deposit Box – can access your data.

Archiving Features
Data Deposit Box own a patent on their Continuous Backup System which waits for files to be altered, takes out the alterations, compresses them , encrypts them and securely copies them to their data centers. This permits faster backups and permits open files such as Outlook to be archived without having to be closed.
File versioning is available: By default 3 versions of all files is kept, however this can be altered to a maximum of 28 if so desired. However, each version – which just holds the alterations from the previous version – adds towards your storage amount.
During setup, Data Deposit Box automatically selects several folders in your local profile: My Documents, Desktop, Favorites, and Outlook Express. You can easily alter, add or delete folders from the backup set by using the client software.
Restore Features
Restores are very straightforward, just right-click the Data Deposit Box icon in the system tray and select Restore. Next navigate to the files you wish to retrieve, right-click and select restore.
Previous versions of files can be recovered via the internet site.
Control and Analysis
There is a clever function called: ‘Backup and Resume’: Backups automatically pause when the keyboard or mouse is used to give more processor speed and internet bandwidth. When the keyboard and mouse have been dorment for a while, the backup resumes from where it left off.
Interface
The client software interface is decidedly old-style – almost to the point of retro – and looks very corporate. But, it operates well, isn’t resource hungry and gives you all the information you need.
The web site is rather prettier but still looks very corporate. Aside from that, it does offer a wealth of information and configuration options. There is even a Corporate Administration section where you can setup all the people you would like to use the service.
The reporting section shows prosisely what has been archived and when. The My Data area gives a simple tree navigation system to locate any of your backed up files along with a search function in case you can’t remember where a particular file is hiding.
Device Support
At the moment there is support for MACs and PCs via the desktop. Any internet enabled device can access the backed up files however these devices are unable to be backed up themselves.
Limitations
The more you backup, the more you have to pay.
File Sharing and Collaboration
Private file sharing is built-in to the internet portal and can be enabled on single files or complete folders. Each share can be assigned a unique password and this can be emailed out along with a unique URL to permit access to the specific files and folders you would like shared. There is additionally an web photo album feature that can be shared in the same way. Either way, files can be viewed and downloaded but not amended.
Public file sharing and file collaboration is not available.
Synchronization
Synchronization is only available from the desktop software to the internet site. Not between devices.
Web 2.0 Integration
None.
Customer Support
Telephone support is available in standard business hours. There is a lack of live chat, forum or blog. However, you can get in touch with support by way of email or by filling in the online form. They seem very keen on self-help and offer a detailed knowledgebase / FAQs section. There are also testimonials, tutorials, a demo and webinars available.
There isn’t a free edition, however, there is a 15 day trial.
Ease of Use
Both the web and client interfaces are simple to navigate around and use. Once setup, you really don’t see the program working accept for the icon in the system tray gently blinking to let you know a backup is underway. There are a lot of options available, however, everything is well laid out and looks good – if a bit retro.
Cost
- Initial setup: free
- Monthly Cost: $2 / Gb / mth
- Initial allowed storage amount: unlimited
- Cost of additional storage: $2 / Gb / Mth
- Cost of additional devices / PCs / users: unlimited
- Referral Program: Yes. $10 is credited to your account and the account of the people you refer once they pay their first invoice.
- E-billing facility: Yes
- Hidden cost: File versions add towards your storage usage, so only set versioning to the amount you actually need.
Conclusion
All-in-all Data Deposit Box is a solid, really secure online archive service. The client’s styling is a touch dated however it has that ‘built to last’ quality which gives the idea that this service will never disapoint you and will last forever. The archive features are brilliant, although the lack of an ability to schedule backups is a bit hard to get used to. In our tests, the first backup of 2Gb of data took a long time: Over 4 hours, however this has to be weighed against the point that there was almost zero CPU or bandwidth overhead because the client stops whenever you use the PC.
The pricing is reasonable if you have a limited amount of data that requires protecting on several PCs. If you have a lot of data then this program could get quite costly. Additionally you will need to watch data expansion if you want to manage costs.
The private sharing and photo album functionality are nice touches yet it would be better to see this expanded by partnering with online document services like Google Docs and Zoho as well as photo editing services.
As a final word we would say that Data Deposit Box is a great solution if you have a small amount of data spread across multiple computers. If you have a lot of data then there are cheaper solutions available.

Feature Set
Security
DropBox has good security: The web portal is SSL encrypted with a requirement for a username and password to view your data. Files in transit are protected with SSL encryption and once on their servers, your information is encrypted with 256 AES encryption. In addition to this, their service runs on the Amazon AWS service which is backed by the Amazon name and quality stamp.
Backup Features
Continuous and ‘Block Level’ backups are provided to ensure your files are regularly protected. Open files are archived on a continual basis bu utilizing ‘Block level Incremental Backups’ which means that DropBox only backs up the parts of a file that have been edited, rather than the entire file.
Attaching files and folders to the DropBox backup schedule is a snap: Merely right-click on the files you want to protect and choose ‘backup with DropBox’. Alternative versions of files are kept so you can always restore an earlier edition of a file if you overwrote it. There is also a status indicator to show how the archive is progressing.
The bad news is network and removable drives are not supported and commercial databases such as exchange and SQL server are not supported directly.
Restore Features
Restoring your data is extremely simple. You have 2 main options: Restore from the web site: Just log in to your account, navigate to the file you would like to retrieve and choose how you woud like to retrieve it. The other option is even simpler: Simply use the DropBox Manager to restore any desired version of a file.
Control and Analysis
There are processor and bandwidth throttling available from the DropBox client software. Reports and logging are also available from the client software.
Proxy servers are well supported with options for HTTP, SOCKS4 and SOCKS5.
Interface
The interface is light and easy to use. There are very few options available which keeps everything simple and easy to use. There is client software to setup and when setup, the software provides a DropBox folder where all protected files are listed.
Device Support
There is currently support for every device under the sun! The way DropBox is designed; if your devices can use the internet then they can use and be protected by DropBox.
Limitations
The web site can only handle file uploads of up to 300Mb in size however you can circumvent this limitation by using compression tools like WinRAR or WinZip which allow you to chop large files into handier pieces. This limit is not present if you utilize the client software.
File retention (before deletion) is thirty days unless you invest in ‘Pack-Rat’ which is available as an add-on to the Premium versions and costs an extra 39 dollars per annum and gives you limitless file versions and file retention.
File Sharing and Collaboration
Data can be shared publicly – which allows the world to see them – or privately where you allocate access rights to specific files and folders for each user or group.
Photo Albums are also supported and are sharable either publicly or privately.
Comments can be attached to each file that is shared and other people can be permitted to add additional comments to create a discussion about a particular file or folder.
Synchronization
Synchronization is supported between different machines and between machines and the web portal. An excellent feature is the LAN synchronization. This lets devices on the same network (home or work) to very quickly synchronize changes locally without going to the internet first. This greatly reduces your internet bandwidth overhead.
Web 2.0 Integration
At the time of writing, there was no direct integration with online services to allow editing of documents, etc.
Customer Support
There is no phone, online chat or direct email customer support available. There are however, many other ways to get help available: You can contact support via a web form on their website; there is an extensive knowledgebase and FAQ section; the online help is detailed to a sensible level. There are also tutorials, a demo and case studies available. However, by far the most useful resources for do-it-yourself support are the forum and blog. These are full of valuable advice and support from both the DropBox staff and clients using the service.
Ease Of Use
Completely easy to get setup with: Signup, login, download the program on all your machines and start syncing. As of December 2009 there is now a LAN syncronization feature which hugely speeds up local syncing. Both the desktop and web interfaces are clean, elegant and a pleasure to use. All-in-all a very easy service to use.

Conclusion
DropBox is extremely easy to setup and use. It provides almost all the features of a well thought out online storage solution: Backup, Web site, multi-machine syncing, file-versioning, online photo albums and file sharing. The only feature missing is integration with online services to permit you to amend and create files directly in your DropBox. The pricing is fair although there are better offers available if you need more than 100Gb. The security is very safe and the customer support is good, although the lack of telephone, live chat and direct email support is a bit restrictive. The forum and blog are great arenas to get your questions discussed. If you want an all-round online storage solution then DropBox is an excellent choice.
Overview and History
Livedrive is backed by Andrew Michael. Andrew created Fasthosts Internet Limited, the UK’s largest and most successful Internet service provider which he sold in 2006 for over 120 million dollars. Andrew commented: “Online storage is the future. Lots of companies are trying to do it today but the products are crap and not a replacement for traditional storage methods. Livedrive has been over two years in the making and will be the standard by which all competing products are judged”.
Livedrive has 2 options: LiveDrive Backup and LiveDrive Briefcase (Pro). The Backup edition allows backup of of unlimited online devices and an unlimited amount of files. The Briefcase or Pro edition includes all the functionality of the Backup version and also provides sharing and synchronization of files from unlimited internet enabled devices.
Feature Set
Security
LiveDrive provides 128bit SSL encryption to their web site along with password protection for your account. Data transfer to and from their servers is protected by 256bit AES encryption – the best protection we have seen for file transfers. Once at their data centers, your data is managed with 256 AES encryption (that’s very good!) and you can use your own private key if you wish.
As for the servers, your data is stored on military grade servers in diverse data centers. These were originally only in the UK, however, since expanding their service to other countries, they have also extended their network of data centers which ensures your data’s protection.
Backup Features
A really notable features of LiveDrive Backup is that it is genuinely unlimited. In the nearly two and a half years we have been using LiveDrive we have archived several terabytes of data. Adding files to the backup set is as simple as right-clicking the file or folder and selecting ‘add to backup’ from the LiveDrive submenu. When Included in the archive schedule, files are monitored for amendments and scheduled for archiving as and when they are amended. File versioning is automatically enabled on any files within the backup set and you can have up to 30 copies of any file. Open files are also backed up frequently and because of the ‘block level incrementation’ ability only the changed parts of files are backup up and these are then used to create a new version of the file. This method massively reduces the volume of data that is required sent to the servers.
Network drives and removable media like pen drives or other USB drives can also be backed up. A progress indicator is included status messages so you know what is being backed up and what is still waiting to be uploaded.
Restore Features
You May restore up to 30 different editions of any file that has been archived by entering the web site, navigating to the file you wish to restore and picking the version of the file by means of date and time. Then simply select where you would like the file restored to and the program will start the recovery process. independent upload and download bandwidth throttling settings in the desktop client but no processor controls. Socks Proxy servers are supported which is good when you are in a shared environment and can only get to the internet by way of a proxy server. You can also set priorities of types of files, so if you are slowly uploading your entire movie collection, you may want to configure word docs and other file types before video files so that your more vital information is backed up faster.
Interface
LiveDrive merges extremely well with the desktop on PC and MAC. It provides a system tray icon to give rapid access to information and option screens. The web site is extremely simple to navigate and use.
There are loads of collaboration, file sharing and synchronization options available in the professional edition of LiveDrive called Briefcase. Devices do need the client software installed to run LiveDrive but this is a simple and straightforward process that takes a few minutes to download and setup.
Device Support
At the time of writing LiveDrive supports Microsoft Windows – XP and up; MAC OS 10.5+; iPhone OS 3.0+; Blackberry and any online-enabled device via the web portal.
Limitations
None found so far.
Collaboration and Synchronization
If you choose the Pro or Briefcase version of LiveDrive then you get a greate set of collaboration and synchronization tools added to your unlimited online backup solution. When you enable the Briefcase option a logical drive is setup on every PC (or MAC) enabling you to store all your shared files. By default the drive letter it L: however this can be changed in the client software. Any file that is put on the virtual drive gets copied to the web site and from there to all other devices that have the briefcase feature activated and are setup for the same LiveDrive Account. File conflicts are configurable and can be set to carry out an automatic option of your choice or to ask what to do with each conflict.
There is also a beta ability called ‘LAN synching’ which lets devices on the same network (for instance you may have a desktop, iPad and Blackberry all using the same internet connection) to syncronize files inside your network instead of uploading every change to the internet and back. This is a really excellent feature especially if you have a bunch of files that you need to initially update on one or several devices.
Another very useful ability of the Briefcase is the option to use a local version of all your data on the logical drive. This means you have access to the L: drive even when you are offline. When you re-connect to the internet, all changed files will be updated on the web site and changes are pushed out to all other devices as and when they also come online.
File Sharing
File sharing is possible in the web portal and in the installed software – if running the Briefcase edition. Simply pick the file or folder you need to share, select the share hyperlink and then choose to share privately or publically.
Public File Sharing allows everyone with the correct web address view the file. If you choose this option, you are given a unique web address for each file. Which can then be sent to anyone you like.
Private File Sharing means only people you choose have access to the file. If this option is chosen then you must enter the email addresses for every user you need to have access to the file. You can include a private message to give more information about the file you are allowing access to. The system then emails all of the addresses previously setup showing general information, your private message and a unique web address for the file being shared.
Web 2.0 Integration
LiveDrive has a music and video player built into the web site, as well as a slideshow ability. LiveDrive is also attached to quite a few online apps including: Facebook, Flickr, SmugMug, Photo Flexer, Zoho, Spibd, PicNik and others. This means you can get to and amend the majority of your files directly from the web site.
Customer Support
There is no telephone or live chat support. However, not counting wanting to ask obscure questions (which we did via email) we have never needed to talk directly to LiveDrive’s support.
There is an email form on the desktop software and on the web portal which they answer very quickly in our experience. The Forum and Blog are brilliant ways to receive information or get questions answered from both other users and from LiveDrive’s technical support team. The FAQ and knowledgebase are good for general queries as is the demo on their website and there are case studies available on their website. There is no free version yet a 14 day free trial is given on Backup and Briefcase accounts.
Ease Of Use
LiveDrive is very simple to use. After paying for your subscription, you can download the desktop program to your internet enabled devices and either start backing up your information or – if you have gone for the far more useful Briefcase option – initiate moving data to the virtual drive. Restores and file sharing are no hassle to use and integrating with online services to amend information while on the move couldn’t be easier.
Cost
Initial setup: Free 14 day trial
Monthly plan costs: Basic – $6.95/mth; Pro – $16.95/mth
Yearly plan costs: Basic – $69.50 / yr; Pro – $169.50 / yr
Initial allowed storage amount: Unlimited
Cost of additional storage: No cost
Cost of additional devices / users: No cost
Referral Program: Yes
E-billing facility: Yes
Conclusion
LiveDrive is a great archiving program, it hides away neatly and only alerts you when you need to be told something. If you opt for the Briefcase version then the load of abilities you are getting easily justifies the extra cost. With the huge range of integration with web devices and web applications you have a complete online storage and workspace that automatically syncs with all your internet devices.
For small businesses this is a great way to join your team together and keep your projects up- to-date. For individuals it is a brilliant approach to have a secure centralized storage location for all your data. There are lower cost Online Storage and Online Backup solutions available; however, We there are no better ones. LiveDrive’s unique blend of easy interaction and huge array of functions make it a sure winner. And to make it even more appealing, if you choose the annual plan, you are given two months free and an extra 10% off FOR LIFE!
Overview and History
SugarSync is a moderately new service. It was launched in the first quarter of 2008 and is designed on the SharpCast Universal Sync Platform, the core technology utilized in SharpCast Photos. Sugarsync is intended to sync all of a someone’s files (documents, media, photos, etc.) across many devices. SugarSync also works as an online backup solution and individuals can access all of their information from a personalized sub-domain on the SugarSync website using the structure of username.sugarsync.com.
Feature Set
Security
Data protection is reasonable. Information is transferred to and from their servers via 128bit SLL encryption which is standard, but, when files are on their servers the data is protected using 128bit AES encryption which is a touch light by today’s standards. They do support private key coding as an alternative, yet, this is also 128bit AES. We would have liked at least 256bit AES or even better 448bit Blowfish. On the physical side, servers are protected in data centers which are controlled for security all day and night and are geo-redundant, meaning that your data is distributed a lot of times every day to loads of locations around the world.
Backup Features
The main utility of SugarSync – as the monica implies – is Synchronization, withal, it can also be reliably used as a backup utility. This is made possible by downloading and setting up the SugarSync Manager. SugarSync continually monitors chosen files for alterations and backs then up in the background even as you amend them. The Web Archive function allows you to drag and drop files to form a permanent version#edition#variant#variation#} of a file that won’t be backed up with additional changes. Network and pen drives can also be backed up but not via automatic schedulling. The backup state can be seen anytime and single files and folders can be allotted normal or high precedence.
SugarSync will automatically store up to 5 versions of files and only the latest edition adds towards your storage limit.
Restore Features
Files can be restored from the SugarSync Manager or from the web portal. Old versions of files can be rebuilt from the web site There is no limit to the number of restores you can have.
Control and Analysis
There is an outbound speed throttle in the SugarSync Manager but no inbound or CPU throttling. Proxy servers are supported and can be configured in the SugarSync Manager.
Interface
The Business edition has support for managing lots of accounts from a central program notwithstanding, the ‘individual’ accounts do not have this functionality.
All accounts need the SugarSync Manager installed on PCs or MACs to permit synchronization.
Device Support
SugarSync currently has support for iPhone, iPod, Blackberry, Windows Mobile. Additional mobile devices can access Sugarsync files via m.sugarsync.com and new platform specific apps are in development.
Limitations
There is a top individual file size limit of 2Gb when transferring between machines, withal, this is dropped when the file is completely uploaded to the web portal. There is no limit#boundary#top end#} to how much can be uploaded, downloaded or synchronized between PCs until the maximum file usage limit for the account is reached. There is currently no support forLinux.
File Sharing and Collaboration
Information can be shared publicly or privately. When sharing privately, items can be set as read-only or as writable. Folders can be password secured.
There is an Online Photo Album, which enables you to distribute photos publicly or privately and offers an option to [post#setup#send#share#} albums on Facebook, or distribute the album as an RSS feed.
When you setup an account with SugarSync, you are given a public domain in the form of username.sugarsync.com where all your ‘private’ information can be stored. Public files can be placed via a unique link that is generated when you designate the file public. Once you share a folder you can receive a daily summary email of activities in that folder.
Synchronization
This is the main function of SugarSync. It allows you to invisibly synch your files automatically across your PC, Mac and mobile phone – one off configuration and you are all setup! Files are also automatically synched to the web site so you can access then from any internet enabled device. Since synching is via a central hub (the web portal) devices do not have to be online during synch runs. When an offline device goes online, the synch manager checks the central data area and synchronizes any changed data quietly in the background.
Web 2.0 Integration
With the exception of the Online Photo Album utility, SugarSync also allows you stream music and video directly from the Web site to any device.
SugarSync permits you to share pictures directly to Facebook.
Customer Support
Telephone support can be purchased at a cost of $99.99 per annum. While this is a good addition to the support offerings, I don’t [see the point in paying#understand why I would pay#} more for the support than I do for the software! Additional interactive support options are: Live chat during business hours, online ticketing, forum and blog. You can also email support directly.
For self help, there are ‘getting started’ and user PDFs, FAQs, a knowledgebase and tutorials. There are in addition lots of testimonials and case studies viewable.
Ease Of Use
SugarSync is a snap to use: Create an account, download the sync manager to all your devices, decide which folders you need to backup or sync and you are up and running.
The Sync Manager and web site are easy to use and the inline help is really useful.
Cost
SugarSync presents 5 paid packages as shown below:
30Gb – free initial setup – $4.99/mth – $49.99/yr
60Gb – free initial setup – $9.99/mth – $99.99/yr
100Gb – free initial setup – $14.99/mth – $149.99/yr
250Gb – free initial setup – $24.99/mth – $249.99/yr
Business – free initial setup – $29.99/mth – $199.99/yr – initial storage allowance of 100Gb and 3 users – additional storage is available at $29.99 per 100Gb per month and additional users can be added at $9.99 per month per user.
All of the above offerings can be used to synchronize any number of devices. There is also a free 2 GB account which allows synchronization of only 2 devices.
If you refer someone to the free account then both you and they receive an extra 250mb of storage. If you refer another person to the 30Gb+ account then both parties are awarded an extra 5Gb.
There are no corporate versions above the single business account.
Conclusion
SugarSync offers a uncluttered and clean system of synchronizing and/or backing up loads of devices. It offers a nicely rounded set of features that give a feeling of a smooth service that has been carefully worked out.
SugarSync seems to be aimed at the individual rather than businesses but that should not deter small businesses from making use of this solid and trustworthy service.
